The estate was established from a long line of farmers tilling the rich soil of Taranto, Brindisi, and Francavilla Fontana. Throughout this long and passionate lineage the tradition has been handed down lovingly from father to son. The current proprietors (brothers) Leonardo and Francesco D’urso inherited this tradition from their grandfather Pietro, and have optimised the quality with the aid of modern technology.

During the years, the estate has steadily expanded, starting from just a few hectares to a current approximate 30 incorporating vineyards, ancient olive groves, and the cultivation of: asparagus, aubergines, peppers, courgettes, tomatoes, artìchokes, prickly pears, figs etc.

Amongst the vines, the use of music is considered essential. The pleasant sounds of Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Vivaldi, and others stimulate growth and quality of the grapes. Tenuta San Barbato constantly examines the results researched by university departments on the positive effects of music, for the growth and maturity of vines.

New applied technologies to the tradition.

Along with the classical music and English meadows, the aisles of the vineyards are filled with an abundance of roses which are a wonderful, aesthetic compliment to the estate.

The cutting edge product is the Primitivo; well known all over the world, not only for its robustness and bouquet, but according to recent international studies, also for its therapeutic qualities.

Another famous and unique native vine, typical of this region is the Negromaro, whose particular bouquet and flavour denotes the ruggedness of the local territory.

Finally, the Extra Virgin Olive Oil, our land, Apulia is the world’s largest producer of extra virgin olive oil. Our extra virgin olive oil has a thousand years tradition and its production is a real art handed down from generation to generation.
